The City of Pointe-Claire held a moving ceremony on March 6, 2026, to unveil a memorial monument honouring the memory of Alain Nadeau, a six-year-old boy who tragically lost his life in Terra-Cotta Natural Park 52 years ago.

Mayor John Belvedere, members of City Council, and former Mayor Morris Trudeau gathered for the intimate ceremony alongside Alain’s family and members of the community. Present were Alain’s mother, Lucile (Girard) Nadeau, and his siblings Guylaine Nadeau, Luc Nadeau, and Pierre Nadeau.

Also in attendance were Bradley Wilson and Ms. Ranger, who had been with Alain on the day of the tragedy in 1974. Members of the Wilson and Ranger families, along with neighbours from that time, came to show their support for the Nadeau family and to honour Alain’s memory.

“Today, we are not simply unveiling a monument, we are giving Alain's memory a permanent home in the heart of our community,” said Mayor John Belvedere during the ceremony. “To the Nadeau family, who have carried this loss for 52 years, we hope this place brings not only remembrance, but comfort. Pointe-Claire does not forget its own.”

The commemorative monument has been installed at the entrance of Terra-Cotta Natural Park on Glanlynn Avenue, near the site of the incident. The monument will serve as a place for reflection and remembrance, while also raising awareness within the community.

The effort to commemorate Alain’s life gained renewed attention in 2024, marking the 50th anniversary of the tragedy. That year, a commemorative sign was installed in Terra-Cotta Natural Park, bringing the event back into the community’s collective memory. Since then, the City of Pointe-Claire and the Nadeau family have worked together to determine the most meaningful way to honour Alain.

Remembering Alain Nadeau

On March 6, 1974, Alain Nadeau was playing with friends in Terra-Cotta Natural Park, just minutes from his family home.

While exploring the area, the young boy accidentally wandered too close to the edge of the park’s creek, which leads to a main storm sewer pipe. At that time of year, melting snow caused the water to rise and created a fast-flowing stream near the entrance of the Glanlynn pipe.

Alain fell into the water and was swept away by the powerful current, resulting in the tragic loss of his life.

The incident left a profound impact on his family, friends, and the surrounding neighbourhood. In the aftermath of the tragedy, a protective fence was installed around the waterway to help prevent similar accidents.

More than five decades later, the newly unveiled monument ensures that Alain Nadeau’s story will remain part of Pointe-Claire’s history and serves as a reminder of the importance of community, safety, and remembrance.
