In a groundbreaking moment for the Catholic Church, Cardinal Robert Prevost — a Chicago native and longtime missionary in Peru — has been elected Pope, taking the name Leo XIV. He is the first pope from the United States in the Church’s 2,000-year history.

The 69-year-old Augustinian priest greeted the world from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica with the words, “Peace be with you,” emphasizing themes of peace, dialogue, and missionary outreach.

While born in the U.S., Pope Leo XIV is also a Peruvian citizen and served for years as an archbishop there before leading the Vatican’s powerful bishops’ office.

A new chapter begins in the Vatican!
