For some it's, It's A Wonderful Life, for others it's Elf, and for me, it's A Christmas Story. No matter which is your favorite, Christmas movies are a sure-fire way to bring the family together and have them laughing (or crying) for generations to come.

In the spirit of Christmas, here are ten facts you likely didn't know about your favorite holiday films.

  1. Jean Shepherd, the American radio personality who wrote A Christmas Story, first published the stories that would later become part of the classic film in Playboy Magazine.

  2. For his role as the Grinch, Jim Carrey worked one on one with a CIA specialist who trained agents to survive torture tactics. The makeup and special effects process was so painful and tedious, Carrey required this special training.

  3. According to Eric Leighton, the lead animator on the team of A Nightmare Before Christmas by Tim Burton, the clay stop animation was shot at 24 frames per second. In other words, the characters were posed 24 different times for each second of the film.

  4. In a 2007 Mythbusters episode, hosts Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman confirmed that one can indeed get their tongue stuck to a frozen pole, just like in A Christmas Story.

  5. In his time as Buddy the Elf, Will Ferrel ate so much candy that he had trouble falling asleep at night.

  6. John Candy, who played Gus Polinski - the polka musician - in Home Alone shot all of his scenes in a whopping 23 hour day on set.

  7. The actor who played Alphie in A Christmas Story was the very first of thousands to audition for the iconic role.

  8. Jim Carrey was originally set to play the lead role in Elf.

  9. Speaking of Elf, Peter Billingsly who played Alhpie in A Christmas Story (1983) has a Cameo role in the Will Ferrel classic. He plays one of Santa's workshop elves.

  10. Tom Hanks voices 5 characters in The Polar Express. The Conductor, the Homeless Man, The lead boy, and Santa Claus.
