Canada Urges Avoidance of Travel to Israel and West Bank Due to Increased Security Risks

By Canadian Press | Date: April 14, 2024

Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly issued a travel advisory urging Canadian citizens to refrain from all travel to Israel and the West Bank due to the escalating security situation in the region. Global Affairs Canada cited a heightened risk of attacks on Israeli territory and noted the high levels of tension and violence in the West Bank.

The advisory follows a recent incident where a Palestinian man was killed and 25 others injured after Israeli settlers stormed into a village in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, setting houses and cars on fire. Minister Joly emphasized the volatile nature of the regional security situation and cautioned that escalation could occur without warning.

In light of these risks, Canadians currently in the area are encouraged to consider leaving via commercial means. This updated guidance comes in the wake of a tragic event less than two weeks ago, where seven aid workers, including a dual Canadian-American citizen, were killed in an Israeli airstrike while delivering food in the Gaza Strip.

Canadian officials stress the importance of staying informed and exercising caution in light of the ongoing developments in the region. Stay tuned for further updates on the situation.
