A woman lost her life Wednesday afternoon after an apparent drowning in the St. Lawrence River near Berthier-sur-Mer, in the Chaudière-Appalaches region.
Emergency crews were alerted shortly after 2 p.m. when a group of swimmers was in the river and one person began struggling in the water.
The Canadian Coast Guard was called in for assistance, said Sûreté du Québec spokesperson Camille Savoie.
Once the swimmer was brought back to shore, first responders attempted resuscitation before transporting her to hospital. She was later pronounced dead.
“While the incident seems consistent with a drowning, our investigation is ongoing,” Savoie added.
Specialized technicians and forensic investigators were dispatched to examine the area.
