This week, the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) confirmed what many already feared: the majestic Snowy Owl (Bubo scandiacus) is in serious decline nationwide.

Here in Québec — where the Snowy Owl has proudly stood as our provincial bird for nearly 40 years — the irony is hard to ignore: despite its symbolic status, it remains legally unprotected in our province.

❄️ What’s causing the decline?

  • Climate change is collapsing Arctic lemming populations, leaving owls without food.

  • Human pressures like collisions and poisoning during migration make survival even harder.

This is more than just about saving one species — it’s about hearing the warning signs from nature. The Snowy Owl is a sentinel species, reflecting the health of ecosystems we all rely on for clean air, food, and a stable climate.

📢 This is a call to action:✅ Québec must close its legislative gap✅ Canada must accelerate real, coordinated conservation efforts✅ We must protect biodiversity — for wildlife, and for ourselves

Let’s not let the Snowy Owl become just a memory. It’s time to move from symbolism to action.
