The Gerry-Robertson Community Centre in À-Ma-Baie was buzzing with joy, teamwork, and a few happy tears this past week as *West Island Community Shares* and *National Bank of Canada* hosted the fifth annual **Bikes for Youth** event. The heartwarming initiative delivered 70 brand-new bicycles to West Island children aged 6 to 9 living in vulnerable circumstances.

For many of these children, this was their **very first bike**—a symbol of freedom, fun, and inclusion. Whether it’s racing to the park, cruising to school, or simply enjoying a sunny afternoon, a bike opens a world of possibilities.

“There’s nothing quite like the joy of a child receiving their first bike,” said **Xavier Lalonde**, Regional Vice-President at National Bank. “It’s a moment they never forget—and we’re proud to help make that happen.”

Thanks to the collaboration of the **National Bank of Canada** and the campaign’s co-presidents—**Structube, Tootsi Impex (Yupik and Elan),** and the **Fondation Bon départ de Canadian Tire du Québec**—as well as gold sponsors **Broccolini, Astor,** and **Schluter Systems (Canada) Inc.**, the event raised a **net donation of \$80,325** for West Island Community Shares.

The day began with more than **60 volunteers** from local businesses assembling each of the 70 bikes, locks, and helmets. Children arrived shortly after, and the atmosphere lit up with pure excitement. Laughter, cheers, and heartfelt gratitude filled the air.

“We work closely with frontline community groups to identify the families who need this most,” said **Meagan Somerville**, Executive Director of West Island Community Shares. “For many, buying a bike simply isn’t possible. This is about giving kids the chance to feel like every other child—happy, free, and included.”

Launched in 2017, the Bikes for Youth campaign has now distributed nearly **600 bicycles** to West Island children and teens over the years. This year’s effort also included a $5,250 donation from the Fondation Bon départ de Canadian Tire du Québec, facilitated by Chris Benoit, General Manager of Canadian Tire in Kirkland.

Beyond bikes, the initiative is part of a broader mission. The $80,325 raised during the event will go directly into local programs supporting food security, mental health services, youth development, and more through West Island Community Shares’ network of 40+ partner organizations.

“As the kids pedaled off, smiles wide and hearts full, one message was clear,” said Somerville. “When our community comes together, even the simplest gift—like a bike—can create a lifetime of memories.”
