Subject: Supporting Employment for Anglophone and Allophone Newcomers in the Wake of Disruptive Cuts
Dear Editor,
My name is Michael Leclair, and I serve as the Executive Director of Projet Communautaire de Pierrefonds, a community organization supporting recent immigrant families as they transition to life in Montreal and Quebec. I also sit on the Board of Inicio, an organization dedicated to helping anglophone and allophone newcomers gain the skills and training needed to find meaningful employment.
In light of the Quebec Ministry of Employment’s recent decision to implement abrupt and severe funding cuts to YES Employment + Entrepreneurship, I want to draw attention to another organization that is actively supporting Montreal’s English-speaking newcomer communities: Inicio.
Inicio’s mission is to empower first and second-language English speakers with the tools, training, and confidence they need to succeed in today’s job market. Their programs address both the strategic and linguistic barriers to employment that many newcomers face, offering a holistic approach to workforce integration.
From foundational employment readiness through the PPE Program (Projet de préparation à l’emploi) to career-focused skills building in the Momentum Program, Inicio provides tailored support including CV workshops, LinkedIn optimization, interview training, and one-on-one coaching. They also offer French and English language programs designed to improve real-life communication skills in professional settings.
The work being done at Inicio is rooted in values of compassion, community, and accountability, and it is helping build a more inclusive and equitable workforce in Quebec.
This could be an important story—particularly in this moment—for those seeking insight into alternative employment supports for English-speaking and immigrant communities across Montreal. I would be happy to provide more information or connect you with Inicio’s Executive Director, Alistair Price.
Sincerely,
Michael Leclair
