The mother of Claire Bell, a 3-year-old girl missing since Sunday, has been charged with child abandonment, according to court documents obtained by The Canadian Press.
The little girl was last seen on Sunday at 9:45 a.m. near Newman Boulevard in LaSalle, but wasn’t reported missing until nearly 6 hours later in Coteau-du-Lac, about 50 km away.
At 2 p.m. Monday, police confirmed the discovery of a dead dog on the side of Highway 30 in Vaudreuil-Dorion, matching the description of Claire’s brown, long-haired chihuahua. The search has since expanded to the Vaudreuil area.
That same evening, police searched near the Pointe-Claire shoreline, focusing on areas around Stewart Hall and the Yacht Club, but as of 11:30 p.m., no trace of Claire was found.
A TikTok video posted by the mother on the day Claire vanished shows her holding her daughter and saying: “You try that again and this is going to get ugly.” The caption reads: “Have you come up against a mother with nothing to lose?”

Authorities have confirmed the mother, Rachel-Ella Todd, 34, has no prior criminal record but has been denied bail. She remains in custody at Leclerc prison in Laval. Crown prosecutors say more charges may follow depending on the outcome of the investigation.
