Letter to the Editor: Increase Disability Benefit Now — Support Those Who Need It Most

Dear Editor,

As someone living with Multiple Sclerosis since age 12, I'm compelled to highlight the pressing issue of inadequate support for people with disabilities in Canada. Despite the government's intention to "reduce poverty and support financial security," many individuals with disabilities struggle to make ends meet.

The Canada Disability Benefit is a step in the right direction, but it falls short.

I'm calling on the government to increase the disability pension to $2,150/month and decouple the Canada Disability Benefit from the Disability Tax Credit. This would ensure individuals with disabilities have access to necessary resources to live with dignity.

The facts are clear:

1. Medical assistance in dying allows for a dignified death, but there's no equivalent program for a dignified life.

2. The current disability benefit is insufficient to address poverty among people with disabilities.

3. The benefit is tied to the Disability Tax Credit, excluding many who need support.

4. Only 1.6 million Canadians have access to the Disability Tax Credit, while 8 million identify as having a disability.

5. During COVID-19, the government recognized $2,000/month as the bare minimum needed to survive.

The increasing cost of living makes essentials like food and housing unattainable for those on fixed incomes. I urge Canadians to join me in advocating for this crucial change. By signing our petition, we can demonstrate support for creating a more inclusive and supportive society for people with disabilities.

As someone who has dedicated their life to advocating for disability rights, I know firsthand the impact that adequate support can have. It's time for our government to prioritize the needs of people with disabilities and provide the necessary resources for a dignified life.
