Letter to the Editor: Facing Change in Pointe-Claire: A Balanced Approach for the Future

Pointe-Claire est une ville en transition. On ne l'aime pas, mais c’est une réalité à laquelle on ne peut échapper.

Tim Thomas a fait campagne en entretenant l’illusion qu’on pouvait arrêter l’avenir net dans sa course. On peut le ralentir — ce qu’on a fait — pour mieux saisir ce que Montréal nous envoie, et ensuite utiliser intelligemment les pouvoirs que la loi nous fournisse pour, en face des forces transformatrices,  sauvegarder le caractère spécial de Pointe-Claire établit depuis des décennies.

Mais le maire Thomas ne s’est jamais comporté autrement que comme un candidat en campagne. Il n’a jamais vraiment accepté la responsabilité de prendre soin de la ville qu’on aime. Et son excuse pour son inaction? Il se plaint d'un manque de pouvoir. Quand il a commencé à dire ça, il y a plus de 18 mois, j’ai demandé sa démission.

Après avoir longuement réfléchi, tout en regardant M. Thomas esquiver ses responsabilités à répétition, je suis maintenant prêt à joindre le geste à la parole.

J’annonce mon intention de répondre à l’appel de détresse SOS manifestement lancé par notre ville et de me présenter candidat à la mairie de Pointe-Claire.

Il est temps de passer à autre chose que les SELFIES; de ne pas se contenter d’un retour vers un OLDIE; mais plutôt de faire avancer notre ville, en exigeant de la vraie SUBSTANCE. Une fois élue je prendrai mes responsabilités en main et, que ce soit pour le meilleur ou pour le pire, j’accepterai le devoir de l’imputabilité.

J’apporterais au poste l’expérience de deux mandats comme conseiller municipal. Je sais comment le gouvernement municipal est censé fonctionner, comment les processus décisionnels doivent être entrepris et comment accompagner et encadrer nos services publics.

Mon objectif, c’est de reconnaitre et de régler les problèmes — pas d’en créer, ou d’en échapper puis de blâmer les autres. Je vais servir la population de Pointe-Claire. Ensemble, dans un nouveau partenariat, nous allons préparer notre ville pour l’avenir, sans sacrifier ce qui fait son charme unique, son caractère spécial, vert, familial et profondément apprécié.

Pointe-Claire is a city in transition. We don’t like it but it is a reality we cannot escape.  Tim Thomas campaigned on the deception that we can stop the future in its tracks. We can slow it, which we did, in order to better understand what Montreal is sending our way and then prepare for the smart application of the powers the law does provide us in order to protect our community's long established  special character despite the forces of change.

But Mayor Thomas has only ever campaigned. He has never seriously accepted the responsibility to provide for the city we love. His explanation for his failure? He complains he has no power. When he first made this claim over 18 months ago, I called for his resignation.

After giving the matter very serious thought all the while watching Mayor Thomas dodge responsibility for everything, I am now ready to match my call then for his action with action now of my own.

I announce my intention to answer the SOS  distress call our city is clearly sending and stand for election as mayor of Pointe-Claire. It is time to finally move beyond SELFIES, not to settle for an OLDIE but instead to lead our city forward with SUBSTANCE. When elected, for better or for worse, the buck will stop with me and not everyone else.

I would bring to the post the experience of two terms on Council. I know how city government is supposed to work, the process through which decisions are supposed to be made, and how to watch over and guide our public service. 

My goal is  to address and solve problems, not to create them  and then, blaming others, hide from them. I will serve  the people of Pointe-Claire, and together, in a new partnership. we will prepare our city for what the future will bring without sacrificing any of the character that makes Pointe-Claire so special, so eco and family-friendly, and so loved.
