From Fire to Vibrant!! Welcome CASA, which stands for Community Anchor, Solidarity and Assistance

After years of perseverance and resilience, WIAF has just announced the acquisition of the former Roxboro Post Office – and big things are coming! This space will soon become CASA, which stands for Community Anchor, Solidarity and Assistance – a name that perfectly captures the mission behind this exciting transformation.

CASA will be more than just a building. It’s going to be a vibrant, inclusive community hub, located just steps away from the future REM station. The plan includes a welcoming community restaurant, a collective kitchen where residents can gather and learn, a revamped thrift store for affordable shopping and sustainability, and modern spaces for educational and intergenerational programming. Think after-school programs, workshops, senior activities and more — all under one roof!

Here’s why this matters:In 2023 alone, the WIAF supported over 1,600 individuals, and 40% of them were children and teens. That’s a staggering number and a clear reminder that poverty and food insecurity exist right here in our own backyard.

It’s been five years since the organization’s devastating fire, and now, with the help of over 140 dedicated volunteers, strong partnerships, and community spirit, WIAF is rising again — stronger than ever.

This announcement also marks a new leadership chapter. Gregory Orleski steps in as the new Chair of the Board, and Michael Labelle has been named the new Executive Director — both bringing vision, compassion, and experience to the table.
