Big changes are coming for all residential pool owners in Quebec! Starting September 30, 2025, all pools — no matter when they were installed — must be secured with a compliant safety fence.
These new regulations aim to prevent tragic accidents by making it harder for children to access pools unsupervised. Here’s what you need to know:
Key Requirements for Pool Fences:
Minimum Height: 1.2 meters (4 feet)
Climb-Proof: No elements or projections that can be used to climb
1-Meter Rule: Equipment or structures must be at least 1 meter away from the fence
Gates: Must have self-closing and self-locking mechanisms
Material: Wrought iron, metal, or glass = OK. Hedges or shrubs = NOT compliant
Chain-Link Fences: Links must be 3 cm or smaller. Add vertical slats if larger.
Exceptions:
Above-ground pools with walls 1.2 meters or higher may be exempt — if access is controlled with a self-closing, self-locking gate or fenced platform.
Portable pools with 1.4-meter walls also qualify for exemption under the same conditions.
Penalties: Fines of up to $5,000 can be issued after the deadline for non-compliant properties.
Make sure your pool is up to code before the deadline! Safety first — let’s protect our kids and our communities.
