According to Project Montreal, the construction of the new bridge will start this spring and should be ready to use by 2023. The new bridge will be built next to the old Jaques Bizard Bridge which will no longer be in driving condition by 2026. The new structure will allow 30,000 vehicles to cross each day, and make it easier for cyclists and pedestrians to move around.
The new bridge will feature four lanes for traffic, a widened sidewalk and a two-way bike path. The project is said to also include planting of 165 trees, the redevelopment of Denis-Benjamin-Viger Park, new street furniture, a gazebo and public art and each end of the bridge.
Things you need to know:
Development of four traffic lanes, one more than on the current bridge;
Construction of a two-way bike path and wider sidewalks;
Redesign of approaches up to the intersections;
Complete reconstruction of the roadway, water and sewer lines and street lighting;
Reconstruction of electrical networks and cabling;
Redevelopment of Parc Denis-Benjamin-Viger;
Planting of trees and vegetation;
Construction of a lookout in the middle of the bridge;
Installation of urban furniture.
Traffic will be maintained throughout the construction period.
