The Drought Code, part of Canada’s Forest Fire Weather Index System, measures the moisture content of deep, compact organic layers in the forest floor. This index is essential for evaluating seasonal drought impacts on Quebec forests and for predicting the potential for long-lasting smouldering fires in deep duff layers and large woody debris.
Using Environment Canada weather data, current and forecast conditions are tracked to assess and project drought intensity across the province. Higher Drought Code values indicate an increased risk of persistent, hard-to-extinguish ground fires, especially in coniferous forests common in Quebec.
