AMCAL is offering new support groups for parents and teens.

AMCAL Family Services has been in operation on the West Island for 40 years and has served the needs of youth, young adults and parents through their residential and outreach programs, supervised visits, and community groups ever since. Their approach is to support youth by promoting and preserving healthy family relationships.

Rebuilding the Village -A Survival Guide to Parenting explores common challenges, offers effective tools and provides support to those navigating the intricacies of parenthood. There is no parenting concern or question left unturned, with sessions on the balance between nurturing and discipline, boundaries, self-care, co-parenting, parenting emerging adults, and much more.

Session Dates:

Sessions are Tuesdays from 7:00-8:30 p.m. via Zoom.

  • January 17, February 21, March 21, April 18, May 23, June 20, September 19, October 17, November 21, and December 19.

Facilitated by: Susan Layne, MSW.

Another program that is ongoing with the hopes of expanding to more West Island schools, is the Emotional Management program. They are looking to hire more facilitators in the near future as to offer this program to multiple schools within their territory at no cost to the schools. After completing the program, teens can expect to have a clear sense of how to regain control of their lives and manage expectations.

The program helps teens develop and maintain the following:

  • Self-worth and positive relationships with others,

  • Effective coping strategies when dealing with difficult situations,

  • An understanding of their emotions and how they impact their lives,

  • An understanding of how their emotions are affecting their relationships with others.
