3 Canadian novelists to speak in online fundraisers for West Island Literacy Unlimited nonprofit

Literacy Unlimited invites you to virtually spend an evening with a Canadian novelist while raising funds to support free adult literacy tutoring in the West Island! Gail Bowen, Catherine McKenzie, and Terry Fallis will be guest authors featured in 3 upcoming Under the Cover fundraising events. Under the Cover is a conversation with a Canadian author about books, the writing process, and topics of interest to the audience.

“We originally started Under the Cover as an in-person event in 2019, but we had to cancel it along with all of our in-person fundraising in 2020 due to COVID-19. We’re excited to be able to offer this event online in 2021, and to have the support of such amazing authors and moderators,” said Literacy Unlimited Executive Director Lucy Baum.

At each Under the Cover Zoom event, a moderator will interview an author for the first part of the evening. At the end of the evening, there will be time for questions to be answered. Three online Under the Cover Events are scheduled for 2021:

Feb. 10 – Gail Bowen, award-winning author of the Joanne Kilbourn mystery series

Moderator: Kristy Snell, senior journalist at CBC Montreal

Mar. 24 – Catherine McKenzie, bestselling author of ten novels including You Can't Catch Me

Moderator: Trudie Mason, editor, journalist, newscaster, and CJAD radio host

Apr. 14 – Terry Fallis, award-winning author of seven national bestsellers including Albatross

Moderator: Jamie Orchard, award-winning journalist; former senior anchor at Global Montreal

By attending an Under the Cover event, reading enthusiasts will have the opportunity to get to know a Canadian author while raising funds to help adults in the community who need assistance with literacy skills.

Baum explained, “Upheaval from the pandemic has been extremely difficult for people in our community who lack access to technology, struggle to fill in government forms to qualify for aid, or need to learn a new skillset to find employment. When the schools closed last spring and our office wasn’t accessible, many of our devoted tutors were able to drop off learning materials curbside and continue working with their learners. We’ve implemented new online tutor training and tutoring options to continue to safely serve the community.”
