Élections Quebec: A new election period begins today in eight English-language school boards to fill, within the Council of Commissioners, unopposed positions in the fall of 2020. Remember that the November 1, 2020 general elections were suspended after the nomination period because of the COVID-19 pandemic and, therefore, no poll was conducted.
Persons wishing to become candidates for one of the 17 vacant seats must contact the school board’s returning officer. The nomination period will take place between August 17 and 22 at 5:00 p.m.
Who can vote in these elections?
Only people entered on the list of electors of an English-language school board can vote in these elections. Generally, parents whose child is admitted or was previously admitted to an English-language school board can vote. Parents whose child is admitted to a French-language school service centre cannot vote in these elections.
A person who is entitled to vote and who does not have a child admitted to the English school board or to the French-language school service centre that serves the territory in which he or she is domiciled can apply to be entered on the list of electors of the English school board of this territory.
Specific measures related to the pandemic
The Ministère de l’Éducation, which is responsible for applying the Act respecting school elections, will define the measures to reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19 during the conduct of this election. Returning officers will be announcing the measures in place in their school board in the coming weeks.
